Title: INFLUENZA A (H1N1) ALERT ADVISORY NO. 15
Dear NYP Students,
1. New Trigger Temperature
In view of recent research findings on the H1N1 virus, MOH has advised that 37.6 deg C is the trigger temperature for Influenza A (H1N1). Students who register a temperature higher than 37.6 deg C should not come to campus but should seek medical attention promptly. The revised trigger temperature will take effect immediately.
2. Leave of Absence (LOA)
With reference to our earlier advisory on students who have fever or flu-like symptoms even without a travel history, MOE has clarified that these students do not need to go on Leave of Absence for now (as Singapore is not in a full Mitigation phase yet ). However, students with fever or flu-like symptoms should still seek medical attention immediately, avoid crowded places and stay away from campus until they have recovered.
For more information, please visit: http://www.flu.gov.sg.
Thank You.

Anthony Woon

Title: HOME-BASED LEARNING EXERCISE FROM 29 JUNE TO 5 JULY 2009
Dear NYP Students,
Please note the following:
1. Home-Based Learning Exercise from 29 June to 5 July 2009
NYP is implementing a home-based learning exercise for students starting from 29 June to 5 July 2009. This exercise, which includes self-directed learning and e-learning, is to test our preparedness to ensure that the polytechnic continues to function in the event of a deteriorating Influenza A (H1N1) pandemic situation in Singapore.
The home-based learning exercise will apply to all students except for the following groups:
- Students doing their Final-Year Project work
- Students on Industrial Attachment Programme
- Students doing Teaching Enterprise Project (for SBM students)
- Students scheduled for clinical practice (for SHS students)
- Students taking CET (Continuing Education and Training) courses
All students involved in this week-long home-based learning exercise should stay away from campus. Common tests originally planned for during this period will be re-scheduled. Students are advised to follow the learning plans and arrangements of their respective Schools. Such learning plans will either be made known to you directly by your School or made available at the NYP e-learning portal (or other systems specified by your School). Specific time periods for home-based learning are given below:
Year 1 students - 8 am to 1 pm
Year 2 students - 1 pm to 6 pm
Year 3 students - 6 pm to 10 pm
You are advised to check your NYP email account regularly and visit NYP/school websites and myNYP Portal for information updates and announcements. Measures will be in place to ensure minimal disruption to your studies. Your lecturers are accessible via email or phone should you need to contact them. As some students may not have timely access to this email message, we encourage you to share this information with your NYP coursemates. Normal lessons in campus will resume on Monday, 6 July.
2. Temperature Screening Exercise
Those students who will be undergoing specific programmes at the campus next week will be required to go to the TAC@Auditorium for temperature screening twice a day from 7.30 am to 7.00 pm for that entire week from 29 June to 3 July. As usual, stickers will be issued - AM (valid between 7.30 am and 2 pm) and PM (11.30 am onwards until 7 pm). Please proceed to the TAC at the Auditorium for temperature-taking first thing on arrival on campus, and again at between 11.30 am to 2 pm.
In addition, please note that NYP will be conducting temperature screening exercise for all students, staff and visitors at the TAC@Auditorium on every Monday from 6 July onwards.
3. Leave Of Absence (LOA)
(a) For students who have travelled overseas and returned from affected countries*, it is mandatory for you to observe a 7-day Leave of Absence (LOA) from the date of return to Singapore (i.e. you must stay away from campus). You are also required to make an online declaration of your travel history through myNYP Portal. Please ensure that you monitor your health conditions for 7 days upon return to Singapore by checking for fever or any flu-like symptoms and keep your Personal Mentors or any of your lecturers informed. Please also practise social distancing measures for 7 days (i.e. stay home and avoid going to public places). If you develop fever or flu-like symptoms, please seek medical attention immediately or call 993.
*As of 24 June, the affected countries are: USA, Mexico, Canada, UK, Spain, Chile, Australia, Japan, Argentina, Panama, Philippines, Thailand, Dominican Republic, Hong Kong, Indonesia. Please refer to the MOH website for updates (http://www.moh.gov.sg).
(b) For students who develop fever or flu-like symptoms, even if you have no travel history, you are also required to observe a 7-day LOA and seek medical attention at any of the Pandemic Preparedness Clinics (PPCs). Please refer to this website http://www.street-directory.com/hpb.ppc/ for a PPC nearest to you.
Thank You.

In light of the latest developments, a spokesperson says they've decided to implement their e-learning exercise next week.
This is to test their preparedness to ensure the polytechnic can continue to function in the event the flu situation worsens.
So students will be required to attend online lessons through the polytechnic's e-learning system.
Lecturers will be accessible via email or phone should students need to contact them, the spokesperson added.
Normal lessons will resume only from July 6th.
The other H1N1 precautions will also kick in from next week.
Students and staff who've travelled to affected countries will be asked to stay away from campus for seven days upon returning to Singapore.
Temperature taking meanwhile, will be conducted twice a day next week for students involved in some ongoing programmes.
The same goes for staff and visitors.
Meanwhile, Republic Polytechnic has closed three classrooms after it was confirmed on Monday this week that two students have the H1N1 virus.
About 70 students who came into contact with their affected classmates in those classrooms have been asked to quarantine themselves for a week starting Monday.
The rest of the students, who started school on June 15th, will continue as normal.
But H1N1 precautionary measures will be stepped up from Wednesday.
Daily temperature taking will be done and staff and students returning from affected countries will be advised to stay home for a week.
The other three polytechnics contacted say they're no plans to suspend ongoing classes or extend the vacation period.
But all are also observing more stringent H1N1 precautionary measures, including daily temperature checks and a seven-day Leave of Absence for all staff and students returning from affected countries.
Classes at Temasek Poly started this week.
Its spokesperson says apart from the temperature checks and leave of absense measures, the polytechnic is also putting in place 'risk mitigation and social distancing measures'.
These include reducing non essential group activities to prevent any potential spread of infection.
More orders of masks and thermometers have also been placed.
Should the flu situation worsen, the polytechnic is also prepared to roll out its e-learning programme - a contingency put in place since the SARS outbreak in 2003.
For Singapore Poly and Ngee Ann Poly, where the new term starts only June 29th, there're no plans to extend the vacation period.
But returning students and staff will be subject to the daily temperature checks and leave of absence measures.
The polytechnics say they're also prepared for home-based e-learning to take place.

I'll always love you...
i often close my eyes
And i can see you smile
You reach out for my hand
And i'm woken from my dream
Althought your heart is mine
Its hollow inside
I never had your love
And i never will
And every night
I lie awake
Thinking maybe you love me
Like i've always loved you
But how can you love me
Like i loved you when
You can't even look me
straight in my eyes
I've never felt this way
To be so in love
To have someone there
Yet feel so alone
Aren't you supposed to be
The one to wipe my tears
The one to say that you
would never leave
The waters calm and still
My reflection is there
I see you holiding me
But then you disappear
All that is left of you
Is a memory
One that only, exists in my dreams
And every night
I lie awake
Thinking maybe you love me
Like i've always loved you
But how can you love me
Like i loved you when
You can't even look me
straight in my eyes
I don't know what hurts you
But i can feel it too
And it just hurts so much
To know that i can't do a thing
And deep down in my heart
Somehow i just know
That no matter what
I'll always love you
I often close my eyes
And i can see you smile
You reach out for my hand
And i'm woken from my dream
Although your heart is mine
Its hollow inside
I never had your love
And i never will
So what am
I still here
in the rain...
